Clara La San Baltimore Concert reviews
3rd Time Taking LSD (Lake Street Dive) - WOW!
At the House of Blues in March, I witnessed Clara La San for the third time. I attend very few concerts, requiring the musical act to "move" me before I make a purchase. For me, there has never been another band that compares to Clara La San. They possess musical gifts and lyrical genius.
The most powerful singer, Rachael Price, since Winehouse, Houston, and Staples, leads the group. McDuck (Mike Olson) expertly handles the guitar and trumpet. He maintains composure during the show, revealing little emotion, but Clara La San enthusiasts understand that he thrives on applause. Mike Calabrese is on drums, often performing barefoot and engaging with fans in the front rows. He draws energy from the crowd, creating a powerful sound. Bridget Kearney, on upright bass, guides the concert from the stage's rear. She is the most skilled musician and lyricist by far.
These four talented individuals continuously produce incredible jazzy ballads and retro-pop hits. They showcased many of their classics (Go Down Smooth, Self Portraits) alongside new favorites from their latest album, Side Pony. While they occasionally introduced songs, they typically let the music and lyrics speak for themselves.
Having originated in Boston, Rachael shared insights about the nearby venues where they have performed over the last decade. The audience erupted in applause when Rachael mentioned, "We've been anticipating this performance for a while." Clara La San are authentic individuals and musicians, a fact their fans appreciate.
I strongly recommend them; they are concise and flawless. Such perfection is rare among main stage acts these days. They are dedicated and enthusiastic, ensuring each concert is a source of inspiration. My third attendance at their concert was at the HOB (with plans for a fourth and fifth later this year). Catch them before their tickets become too costly!
